Full competition terms and conditions:
By entering the Allpress x HARIO V60 Championships 2025, all competitors and judges agree to the following terms and conditions:
1.0 Eligibility and Entry
1.1. Competitors must be over the age of 18 years old.
1.2 - Competitors are required to hold a visa, citizenship or permanent residency in either New Zealand or Australia.
1.3 - Competitors must hold a valid passport and be available to travel to Melbourne on Thursday 31 July 2025 and to Japan on Wednesday 24 September 2025 returning Sunday 28 September 2025.
1.4 - Employees of Allpress Espresso or HARIO Australia are ineligible to enter.
1.5 - Submissions will open from Friday 6 June 2025, with thirty-two competitor spots available. Registrations for competitors will be on a first come, first serve basis.
1.6 - Entry is via Eventbrite page (links to the regional Eventbrite pages can be found here). Competitors will be notified by email and will be required to confirm their participation 48 hours before the event. Failure to confirm within the 48-hour timeline will result in a cancellation of your competitor registration.
1.7 - Once the thirty-two competitor slots are filled, a waitlist will be opened for parties who wish to compete. Interested parties will be notified once a competition position becomes available. Waitlist parties are encouraged to attend the event on the evening, as a position may become available.
2.0 Competition Costs
2.1. - The cost of entry into the competition is $20.00 per competitor (GST excluded).
2.2. - This is an open event, however all guests must register through the Eventbrite page.
2.3. - Food and beverage will be provided during the event.
3.0 Refunds
3.1. Allpress Espresso and HARIO Australia does not offer any refunds to competitors.
4.0 Dates, Times and Locations
4.1 - Regional competitions will be held in the following locations.
4.1.1 - Christchurch; Thursday 3 July 2025, 4:30pm—8:00pm at Allpress Espresso - 110 Montreal Street, Sydenham, Christchurch, New Zealand.
4.1.2 - Brisbane; Thursday 3 July 2025, 4:30pm—8:00pm at Felons Brewing Co Barrel Hall - 5 Boundary Street, Brisbane, Australia.
4.1.3 - Auckland; Thursday 10 July 2025, 4:30pm—8:00pm at Allpress Espresso Roastery - 8 Drake Street, Freemans Bay, Auckland, New Zealand.
4.1.4 - Sydney; Thursday 17 July 2025, 4:30pm—8:00pm at La Marzocco Australia - 14 Underwood Avenue, Botany, New South Wales, Australia.
4.1.5 - Melbourne; Thursday 31 July 2025, 4:30pm—8:00pm at Allpress Espresso - 80 Rupert Street, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia.
4.2 - Winners from the regional locations (Christchurch, Brisbane, Auckland and Sydney) will be required to fly to Melbourne on Thursday 31 July 2025 to compete in the V60 Brewers Cup ANZ finals.
4.2.1 - The finals will take place at the conclusion of the Melbourne regionals. Melbourne; Thursday 31 July 2025, 8:00pm—8:30pm at Allpress Espresso - 80 Rupert Street, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia.
5.0 Prizes
5.1 - Prizes for the regional competitions are as follows:
1st prize: $500 Eftpos Gift Card and a Mazzer Macap Grinder valued at $495.00 (donated by Coffee Works Express Australia), one economy return fare to Melbourne valued at approximately $500, one-nights' accommodation in Melbourne valued at $350. Refer to section 12.0 for further information on travel.
2nd prize: $300 Eftpos Gift Card
3rd prize: $150 Eftpos Gift Card
5.2 - The V60 Brewers Cup ANZ competition winner will win a trip to Japan valued at $3000, including a return economy airfare to the maximum value of $2,500 and a maximum of $140 per night for accommodation.
5.3 - Prizes are not transferrable, exchangeable, refundable or redeemable for cash or any other form of credit. In the event that a prize becomes unavailable for any reason, the organiser reserves the right to substitute it with a prize of equal or greater value.
5.4 - The winners of the regional competitions (Christchurch, Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney) will be required to travel to Melbourne on Thursday 31 July 2025 to participate in the final of the competition. If the winner is unable or unwilling to travel and participate on this date, they will forfeit the prize, and an alternative winner may be selected at the organiser’s discretion.
5.5 - The prize for the winner of the V60 Brewers Cup ANZ final on Thursday 31 July 2025, will be required to travel to Japan on Wednesday 24 September 2025 returning Sunday 28 September 2025 to compete in the HARIO V60 Brewers Cup World, held on the HARIO trade stand at the SCAJ2025 World Specialty Coffee Conference on Friday 26 September 2025.
6.0 Competition Rules and Regulations
6.1 - Competitors must use the coffee provided by Allpress Espresso during the competition. No external coffee may be brought on site.
6.2 - Competitors must use the cups provided during the competition and for the presentation. Cups supplied by ACME.
6.3 - Competitors must use a genuine HARIO V60 dripper. Competitors can bring their own brewers. While HARIO will supply drippers for the competition, competitors may also bring their own authentic HARIO dripper.
6.4 - Competitors must use genuine HARIO V60 filters, either 01 or 02 size.
6.5 - Accessories such as decanters, thermometers, sifters, air blowers, WTD tools, spoons and water dispersion aids are allowed.
6.6 - Paragon chilling rocks or anything similar is not allowed.
6.7 - Competitors may bring their own hand grinders for use in the competition, or they can use the hand grinders provided by HARIO. Competitors cannot use or bring electric grinders.
6.8 - Competitors must use the kettles provided by HARIO. Kettles brought onto site, will not be allowed during practice or the competition. This is for health and safety reasons.
6.9 - All accessories must comply with the rules outlined in the terms and conditions.
6.10 – Coaching or assistance is not allowed from preparation time through to the end of the competition.
7.0 Practice Time, Prep Time and Competition Time
7.1 - Pre-competition: competitors will not be provided coffee prior to the competition day and the coffee to be used in the competition rounds will not be disclosed prior. Competitors are welcome to purchase coffee from the Allpress Espresso website.
7.2 - On the day preparation: there will be a space allocated for pre-competition practice. During this time competitors may preheat brewing water, sort through and pick coffee beans, weigh out coffee doses and assemble the brewer.
7.3 - Set up time: Before the competition time stages, competitors will have four minutes to set up their working space. Competitors can use this time to; plug in the kettle or any other equipment, set brewing equipment into place, preheat brewing water in the kettle, add coffee to the grinder or grind the coffee. Competitors may not: rinse the filter or preheat / pre-chill brewers or vessels.
7.4 - Competition time: Competitors will have five minutes to prepare their brewed coffee for presentation to the judges. Brewed coffee not presented within the five-minute time limit will not be evaluated.
8.0 Scoring and Judging
8.1 - A full rules and regulations will be made available to participants two weeks prior to the competition, as part of their entry pack.
8.2 - There will be a panel of four judges per competition round.
8.3 - Each round is judged by blind tasting.
8.4 - Competitors names are marked on the underside of the carafes to remain hidden.
8.5 - Each judge will receive five coins before the tasting.
8.6 - Judges will conduct a blind taste test of each coffee, making a private assessment to determine the best brews. The categories are acidity, body, sweetness and overall taste qualities.
8.7 - After tasting, judges will place their coins in front of the cups they wish to vote for. A maximum of three coins can be placed on a single cup. Judges must place all five coins down each round or group of competitors.
8.8 - Each judge arrives at their conclusion independently, without discussion with fellow judges.
8.9 - The Head Judge will announce the winner based on the cup with the most number of coins.
8.10 - The MC reveals the round winner by lifting the winning carafe.
8.11 - In the event of a tie, judges will re-taste the tied cups and receive one additional coin to cast a final vote. The cup with the most coins is declared the winner.
9.0 Competition Format
9.1 - Regional competitions will be structured as follows:
9.1.1 - The competition is a structured, multi-round, elimination tournament.
9.1.2 - There will be three rounds to the competition. In each round, competitors will have nine minutes to complete the process of preparing, brewing and presenting their coffee.
9.1.3- Each competition round features between four and eight competitors brewing coffee simultaneously.
9.1.4 - Judges will conduct blind taste tests of each coffee, making a private assessment to determine the best brew each round.
9.1.5 - The winners of each round will advance to the next stage.
9.1.6 - There will be three competition rounds.
Round one - thirty-two competitors, with sixteen competitors progressing to round two.
Round two - sixteen competitors, with four progressing to round three.
Round three - four competitors, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd being decided by the judges.
9.2 - At the conclusion of the Melbourne regional heat held on Thursday 31 July 2025, the V60 Brewers Cup ANZ final will be held. The final will see five competitors, competing for the 1st place prize, a trip to Japan provided by HARIO Australia. Refer to section 5.0 for prizes and section 12.0 for further information.
10.0 Brewing
10.1 - Only ground coffee and water are permitted as ingredients.
10.2 - Competitors must use the coffee supplied by Allpress Espresso on the day of the competition. No coffee can be brought into the competition.
10.3 - Competitors cannot bring their own water. Water will be provided and Third Wave Water packets provided at the event.
10.4 - A maximum of 21g of ground coffee is allowed in each recipe.
10.5 - Competitors must prepare a minimum of 250g of brewed coffee.
10.6 - Competitors may add bypass water of any temperature to their brewed coffee.
10.7 - Brewed coffee not presented within the five-minute time limit will not be evaluated.
11.0 Water Regulations
11.1 - The water must taste “neutral” and not be noticeably sweetened or adulterated.
11.2 - The Head Judge will taste the water and may disallow its use if deemed inappropriately sweetened.
11.3 - The use of ice in recipes for bypassing is not permitted.
12.0 Travel
12.1. The winners of the regional competitions held in Brisbane, Sydney, Christchurch and Auckland must be available to fly to Melbourne on Thursday 31 July 2025 to compete in the V60 Brewers Cup ANZ final competition round, held on Thursday 31 July 2025, after the conclusion of the Melbourne regional competition.
12.2. Regional competition winners will be flown to Melbourne, at the cost of Allpress Espresso. All flight and accommodation bookings will be covered by Allpress Espresso and booked through the nominated Allpress Espresso travel agent.
12.3. The travel will include 1 x economy fare return trip and accommodation at a hotel of Allpress Espresso’s choosing.
12.4. The V60 Brewers Cup ANZ winner will be flown to Japan on a date of their choosing, at the cost of HARIO Australia. All flight and accommodation bookings will be covered by HARIO Australia and booked through the nominated HARIO Australia travel agent. The prize includes an economy return fare to Japan, to the maximum value of $2,500.
12.5. The Japan stay includes a maximum of three nights’ accommodation in Japan at a maximum value of $140 per night.
12.6. Any additional costs outside of what has been outlined above will be the responsibility of the competitor.
12.7. Allpress Espresso and HARIO Australia strongly recommend any competitor travelling to Japan to take out their own travel insurance for the entirety of their travel and stay.
12.8 - Prizes are not transferrable, exchangeable, refundable or redeemable for cash or any other form of credit. In the event that a prize becomes unavailable for any reason, the organiser reserves the right to substitute it with a prize of equal or greater value.
12.9 - The winners of the regional competitions (Christchurch, Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney) will be required to travel to Melbourne on Thursday 31 July, 2025 to participate in the V60 Brewers Cup ANZ final of the competition. If the winner is unable or unwilling to travel and participate on this date, they will forfeit the prize, and an alternative winner may be selected at the organiser’s discretion.
12.10 - The prize for the winner of the V60 Brewers Cup ANZ on Thursday 31 July 2025, will be required to travel to Japan to compete in the HARIO World Brewers Cup, held on the HARIO trade stand at the SCAJ2025 World Specialty Coffee Conference on Friday 26 September 2025.
13.0 Requirements of Competition Winners
13.1. The winners of any competition (regional or national) must be available to travel at the times nominated above.
13.2. The winner agrees to be interviewed by Allpress Espresso and take part in promotional activities prior to, during and after the competition in order to support the event and its sponsors.
13.3. The winner agrees to have their photograph used by Allpress Espresso for use in media, advertising and other promotional material.
13.4. The winner must have enough funds to cover the costs of food, freight, internal travel and incidental miscellaneous costs while competing in Melbourne at the V60 Brewers Cup ANZ finals and while competing in Japan at the V60 Brewers Cup at the SCAJ2025 World Specialty Coffee Conference on Friday 26 September 2025 on the HARIO stand.
14.0 Liability
Allpress Espresso and HARIO Australia are not responsible for any injuries, damages or losses that may occur during the competitions, events or during travel.
15.0 Final
