Cup for a Cure: Together, we can make a difference

We believe in the power of community and a great cup of coffee. That’s why we’ve partnered with Cure Parkinson’s NZ to launch the Cup for a Cure campaign – a meaningful initiative to advance critical research into Parkinson’s disease. Together, we can make a difference, one cup at a time.

We’re incredibly proud to partner with Cure Parkinson’s NZ for this campaign. By enjoying your favourite coffee, you can contribute to advancing treatments and making a tangible difference in the lives of thousands affected by this condition (CupForACure.org.nz).

Why this campaign matters

Parkinson’s disease is the fastest-growing neurological condition worldwide, with its prevalence expected to double in the next 10–15 years. In New Zealand, over 12,000 Kiwis are living with Parkinson’s, and studies indicate that one in 37 people may be diagnosed in their lifetime, potentially impacting over 138,000 New Zealanders.

Currently, there is no cure for Parkinson’s. Existing treatments offer symptom relief but do not address the root causes or progression of the disease. This campaign aims to change that by funding research to develop therapies that can slow, stop, or even reverse Parkinson’s progression.

How you can help

Running from November 2024 to February 18, 2025, the Cup for a Cure campaign invites you to:

  • Donate online: Support Parkinson’s research through the campaign’s website.

  • Enjoy free coffee: Receive a free coffee at Allpress cafés or other participating cafés

  • Donate more than $10 and receive a code for a complimentary coffee product from our web store, a token of our appreciation for your generosity.

Your participation is more than a donation; it’s a step forward in the fight against Parkinson’s. Every contribution fuels research that has the potential to transform lives.

Allpress Studio exhibition and live Q&A

As part of the campaign, Allpress Studio is hosting an inspiring exhibition until the end of January 2025, which showcases Cure Parkinson’s NZ’s mission and the stories of those impacted by Parkinson’s.

Coffee with Toa Fraser

In December, we hosted a special event – a live Q&A session featuring acclaimed director Toa Fraser (known for Sweet Tooth and many other great productions), who courageously shared his journey with Parkinson’s. The session, hosted by Dominic Bowden (renowned New Zealand television personality), was an inspiring reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit. You can watch Toa’s moving interview here.

Coffee and Parkinson’s: a unique connection

Did you know that coffee might offer more than just a caffeine kick? Research suggests that moderate coffee consumption (2–3 cups a day) may lower the risk of developing Parkinson’s. While the exact reasons are still being studied, evidence points to neuroprotective components beyond just caffeine. Coffee also fosters social connections – a key aspect of mental well-being for those living with chronic conditions.

"Studies have shown that in comparing groups of coffee drinkers and non-coffee drinkers, the risk of Parkinson’s disease is actually lower in coffee drinkers, which is fantastic.” – Daniel McGowan, Cure Parkinson’s NZ Chief Executive
