The much-loved NOURISH exhibition features the best ceramic domestic ware created by Auckland Studio Potters (ASP). The annual exhibition celebrates functional ceramics, showcasing the artistry and skill of local potters and fostering a sense of community and creativity in a beautiful gallery space.
Since the early 1960s, ASP has fostered a vibrant community of potters. This beloved event showcases functional ceramics, celebrating the artistry and skill of local potters. In recent years, judges such as Yuka O’Shannesey from Public Record and Zoe Black from Objectspace, have brought their discerning eyes to the event, elevating the standards and prestige of the exhibition.
About Auckland Studio Potters
Founded in the early 1960s, the ASP is a thriving community organisation with over 300 members. ASP is dedicated to promoting potters and ceramic artists of all skill levels through a comprehensive programme of classes, workshops, and exhibitions. Located in Onehunga, ASP has grown to become Auckland’s premier pottery teaching institution, equipped with extensive facilities with a total of 12 kilns of various types – including a brand new gas-fired salt kiln.
ASP’s programme is diverse, offering classes for beginners to advanced potters. Professional potters serve as tutors, guiding students through the intricacies of wheel throwing, hand-building techniques, and sculpting. Each year, ASP invites a master potter from overseas to hold an exhibition and master class, providing members with unparalleled learning opportunities.
The Origins of NOURISH
NOURISH has its roots in ASP’s longstanding tradition of showcasing functional domestic ware. Initially sponsored by Life Member Tony Bacon, the exhibition was renamed in 2017 by former ASP Director Nadine Spalter. The name “Nourish” was chosen to celebrate the idea that domestic pottery enriches the soul, nourishing through food, community, and the creative process.
Held annually in the beautiful Allpress Studio, NOURISH creates a perfect synergy between art and community; a place where people meet to discuss, work, view art, and share food and coffee, all within an inviting and inspiring environment.
A Day in the Life at ASP
At ASP, the sense of community is fostered through daily rituals. Every weekday, students bring shared food for morning tea, creating a warm and social atmosphere. These gatherings provide a perfect opportunity to discuss pottery ideas over coffee and treats.
This Year’s NOURISH Exhibition
This year promises to be as exciting and diverse as ever. The esteemed Peter Lange, a renowned New Zealand ceramicist and sculptor, will be judging the event. Lange has been a significant figure in the ceramic arts world for over 50 years, contributing to ASP since 1975. His expertise and dedication to the craft have earned him a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to ceramic arts in 2016.
We anticipate a wide array of works from ASP's talented members, showcasing innovative and experimental ceramics. NOURISH continues to be a well-received exhibition, appreciated for the variety and quality of pieces on display and available for sale.
